I bought 2 red metallic rainbow fish a under a week ago annd the first few days they were fine, but one of them has turnt this really darkish rusty copper colour, whilst the other is still in good colour. The two normally hang out in a pair but no longer seem to do it. Does anyone know what this is down to?

Replies would be appreciated.

Need to know ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH levels. Also, how big is your tank, what other fish are in there, and what do you feed them?

Do you notice any other symptoms, specfically have you seen him scratching against objects in the tank?

No the writer of this information below.

Some parasites cause lesions that look like a fine red-gold dust, which is seen easier under a light. This very fine appearance is why this condition is called velvet disease.

I have experienced change of colour in Rainbow fish as they grow and mature - especially the males. But females change colour too.

My own two adults (depending on their mood) sometimes play chameleon and have red / brown bands.

I don't "think" it's anything to worry about.

But out of interested, do you know if they are male / female ? How large are they ? How large is your tank ?
Is your tank mature or is it a fairly new tank under 6 months old ?

Thanks for the replies, sorry for replying so late to my own thread.

Yesterday they 2 fish were fine, they were together a lot and they both seemed a good, but today one of them seems to have gone that rusty colour.
