Ok, I have 1 male red platy & 1 female black tail platy, they was getting on like a house on fire for the past 4 weeks, but lately I have noticed the male has been chasing the female everywhere round the tank, and also I noticed the female is missing a fin on one side. it seems like male is bullying the female, but why? This is the only reason or culprit that could have done this, also looks like its top fin is starting to go aswell.

My male is doing the same to the female. He persues her around the tank with his fin clamped down. Have no idea if it is some weird courtship thing although luckily he hasn't nipped her fins.

Be interested to see the answer you get to this if someone knows about fish behaviour.

I was just reading that sometimes when the female is pregnant then the male can get quite aggresive, but my female isnt pregnant (from what I can see).

Mine started out like yours, but I thought nothing of it and its only recently I have noticed the female has lost its left fin. :S

My female gave birth a few days ago, unfortunately whilst I was at work.. I've searched but I think my Danios ate all the fry :(

They started swimming around each other and courting almost immediately. You can tell because his fin interacts with hers (sorry not good at discussing the sex lives of my fish :D ) But since then he has stalked her with his fin clamped. It's a bit annoying to watch really, as I wish he would leaver her alone.

I am wondering now from what you have just found is that she might be pregnant. In the early stages you can't tell. It took a few weeks before you notice the fry forming in her tummy. So I imagine yours could be pregnant.

When fish want to mate, they tend to erect thier fins and go forward and backwars in a very fast motion to display thier colours to attract the females.

Bump!

the male stopped chasing the female for majority of today, but now hes chasing her and stalking her, then finds her, chases, and looks like trying to take a bite. female looks quite scared, anyone know please???

You should get yourself another female or two and see if that doesn't cut down on the aggression...you should always have at least two females per male when keeping livebearers for this very reason.

Thanks, I will go along to my local shop and pick up another female tomorrow if it does not stop..

Thanks

Just simply introduce 1 or 2 more female platy's into the tank and this should solve the problem.
