My platys had fin rot and have red gills they are fine but I am worried about them btw a livebearer specialist did not know what it was he was over at my house because he is my mom and dads old friend

There is often a certain degree of redness around the gills, I assume because that's where the blood goes to collect oxygen. However if it is more than usual, then the prime suspect is ammonia poisoning.

Water quality issues (ie ammonia and nitrite) are often the cause of finrot as well.

What are your current water stats?

I'm going to say your filter is not cycled and your fish are slowly being slowly poisoned to death.

You need to;
1/ Get a water test kit
2/ Do daily 50%+ water changes.

Terry.
