Hello,

i bought a pair of gouramis 2 days ago, today i have noticed the male has a frayed fin (bottom fin), around the fraying is a large pale circle. Please please can someone help me in identifying whats wrog withhim as i have no idea how or if to treat this.

0 ammonia
0 nitrite
15 nitrate
PH 7.5
internal sponge filter
live plants
125 litres (27 uk gallons)
tank mates are 1 zebra danio (others died from stress), 1 bristle nosed catfish (bought at the same time as the gourami's)
temp 77F (should i raise the temp a couple of degrees?)
no airation stone.

He is hiding behind the filter most of the time, not feeding. He was fine when i first introduced him to the tank, he fed well and was trying to woo his female. Please can somebody help me, this s one of the most beautiful fishi have ever owned and i really couldn't stand it if it died.

Many thanks in advance

Jonny.

If the fins are raggy and there a pale translucent circle I would treat the fish for bacterial finrot.
Myxazin by waterlife.

Thanks wilder.
I just posted this thread again with two pictures, i would be very greatful if you could take a look, the pictures aren't the best quality but there good enough to diagnose, since the pics were taken the pale patch has doubled in size, i can't get medicine until tomorrow at about 4pm and i don't have the luxury of a quarantine tank, what do you think is the best course of action?

yes it is, the fin is also disintigrating more and more, its starting to get a fluffy white patch around the part that is disintigrating.

Bacterial med what your location.
If uk myxazin by waterlife but the fins sound bad and they really need an antibiotic.

OK, i haven't encountered this before so i don't have a clue wha to do, i am in Leeds. How do i get anti biotics?

The only way to get antibiotics in the uk is through a vet.
I used my antibiotics that a doctor has percribed.
You can only use antibiotics in a hospital tank as it wipes the benefical bacteria out in the filter.

I would get the waterlife med myxazin for now to treat the whole tank.
The fish with the bad finrot sounds in a bad way and to be honest it dosn't look very promising.

I see that this is the post that's being replied to!!

Wilder has it all in control ignore my post in the other topic!!! Good luck!!

oh no, damn it. Why is this happening? since my tank finished its cycling 2 weeks ago i have lost 4 of 5 zebra danios and now my gourami.

Ok so do you think it would be better just to remove the sick gourami and well.....put it out of its..you know  Is the infetion likely to make the other fish sick???

Thnks sofia.

I wouldn't put him down yet as I like to give the fish a chance with meds.
I would do some water changes and add the correct amount of med back to the water removed.
Cycling tank takes it toll on fish, seen it before they get through the cycle and then get ill.
Finrot is mainly caused by bad water quality.

Ok so i will get some of the med tomorrow then do a water change (what %)? No no i did fishless cyling then introduced the fish when it was complete, i just don't understand as the water quality is just about perfect. Thankyou so much for your help wilder. How long would you give him on meds? for example if it continued to get worse for anothr 4 or 5 days would you say that there would be no hope? Is it contagious to my other fish?

The other fish should be fine in the tank with the med,
Read your other post and the behavour he showing are signs of a dying fish.
I don't hold out much hope for him to be honest.

Taken from the link above.
Fin Rot in and of itself is not contagious, but if you keep fish in a community tank you may end up with several fish contracting the infection. This is because the bacteria that cause Fin Rot are opportunistic bacteria - poor water conditions stress fish out, and when fish become stressed, their immune systems become weak. Weak fish are not able to fight off illnesses that healthy fish easily can. So if you have poor water conditions or something else causing stress in the occupants of your tank, you may have an "outbreak" of Fin Rot.

OK :shout: Well thankyou very much for your help wilder. i will be sure to send you a message to let you know how it all goes.

Thanks again.

Jonny

Hope he does pull round sometimes they can.
Wish you all the luck.
