Red Ear turtles

Ok I'm looking into getting a red ear turtle and want to know basically what their requirments are (food, light, water, etc.). However, one stikler my parents have with a turtle is their tendency to carry disease, and I want to know what is the risk involved with transfer of diseease from the turtle to either humans or other animals (dogs, cats, birds, fish)? I just have to convince my parents its safe with some hard facts and they might let me get one, so any help would be appreciated.
