I've noticed a small red spot (dot-size) on a fin of polka-dot loach.

Lots of experience with white spots...but never saw a red one yet...any idea what this may be and what is the right procedure for dealing with it?

The fish behaves normally, the spot is fairly small -- but seems like an infection.

Thank you in advance for any ideas.

there's a red spot on my new betta as well
doesn't seem to effect him at all.
i have no idea either!

information greatly appreciated!

Odd. Unsure actually. I've seen the odd red 'dot' around the mouth area on some of my fish in the past, usually caused by bumping into something or a scrape but not on a fin. ::/:
Hugs,
P.

maybe it's an old injury? (or new injury?)
on my betta its right on the top of his spine
in the LFS he was in with a bunch of mollies who were much bigger than he was.

Not injury. I looked more carefully, and the it seems to follow with the lymph(?) lines in the fin, and there is a similar ligher thing in another fin.

I have a vague recollection of seeing very similar red lines in goldfish fin's..., something fairly common (I had goldfish but years ago). Does anyone know anything about it?

Thank you.

Regarding the small red dot, small pinprick like haemorrhages (called petechiae) can be due to a local lesion, a generalised septicaemia or toxaemia caused by acute viral and bacterial infections.

Tail and fin rot can be prevented by keeping ammonia and nitrite levels low, adding salt at regular intervals, and quarantine of new fish. Guppies are particularly susceptible to this disease, and you will first recognize it as a ragged edge on the tail fin. Healthy adult tail fins should have a fairly straight edge, though sometimes adolescents will have temporary ragged fins due to uneven growth. As the disease progresses, the other fins become ragged, and the fins develop a white (sometimes though not always, fuzzy) margin. Sometimes, the fins will also develop red bloodspots. If the disease is allowed to continue, your guppies will die. In most species of fish this disease is a combination of bacteria and fungus on the fins themselves, however guppies tend towards acquiring an internal bacterial infection which spreads to the fins. You may try the salt treatment (instructions given later), as this sometimes does the trick. If that doesn't work, an antibiotic such as tetracycline can be used. Let your pet shop help you. They will specifically need to know if you use a bio-filter as many antibiotics will kill your filter.

curious!! i've only had my betta 2 days now, i don't THINK the spot is getting bigger. he's on anti-fin rot/fungus meds at the moment. eagle eye on the little fella!

where is your guppies red dot?

near his mouth, i am treating him and am not sure if contageous
hes had dot for 2-3 weeks and no sign of getting bigger.
what about your betta?

What are you treating him with.

my betta has got raggedy fins, but whether thats from being eaten by unsuitable tankmates, self-mutilation from stress (of being right next door to a MUCH larger betta) or fin rot i don't know.
he's on meds for that
if the spot is related to fin rot, then that would make sense.

see how he is in a week or two!
good luck with your guppy!

oh...i'm treating mine with king britiish fin rot & fungus control

If they have red spots i would get them onto a internal bacteria med, good luck.
