I rescued a pair of young red devils from someone that had no idea what their needs were and couldn't provide for them. They are still very young and I can't tell if they are male or female yet. Any idea of how old they are when you can start telling the sex? I have researched online about these fish but some stuff is a little contridictory. Are Midas cichlids the same as red devils? How do you tell the difference? Any info on these guys would be greatly appreciated.

midas cichlids and red devils are 2 different species. the midas is Amphilophus citrinellus and the red devil is Amphilophus labiatus. Here is a very informative article with information on several Amphilophus species.

Now, if these fish came from about any petstore then more than likely they are a hybrid of the 2. Most red devils in pet stores are devil/midas crosses. The only way to get a pure red devil or midas is through a reliable and reputable breeder or importer. care would be pretty much the same for either species. the only real difference is in how big the fish will grow. a pure devil will usually max. around 11-12". a pure midas can grow a bit larger to around 14" or so. the devil/midas crosses out there can reach anywhere from 10-16". :)
