I'm looking for a new tank, and would like to include angel fish.

Can some please recommend a minimum tank height? I want to consider how large angels grow and take into account the length of the vertical fins adding to the height of the fish.

Thanks

I think it is 16inches for standard angels and 20inches for veil tails.

Would this be 16 (or 20) inches just of water height, or also including depth of gravel and space at top? Sorry for asking this detail, but I need to make sure I get this right first time. :)

Thanks.

Most angels will grow to the size of the tank. Obviously if the tank is only 30cm high then that is stupid. 20cm water surface to gravel.

16" of water depth for standard fin angels, 18" for veils is the minimum for proper fin growth. If you consider shredded ventrals & clipped dorsals growing to the size of the tank, then yes they will grow to the size of the tank. I consider that an environmentally produced deformity.

No fish grows to the size of a tank too small for it. They all, angels included, will grow to the size determined by their genetic blueprint. A tank too small for this growth will result in stunting, and other deformities.

I personally would opt for a 24in. high tank, especially if it is going to be planted, which would give an effective water depth of around 22in. I have found that my angels are less skittish in a deeper tank.

I've found that is generally true as well Windsor. Having more of that third dimension to maneuver in seems to make them feel more at ease.

Some of that may have to do with the temperment of the angel as well. I was breeding silvers that had some wild blood in them a while back, they were pretty easily spooked, no matter what the size or depth of the tank was.

On the other hand,I had a black in a 20 long, recovering from being beat pretty severely when another couple of blacks paired. This tank was the only one open, and just to make it worse, was on the bottom slot of a low rack, 8" off the ground. This fish watched my legs, the dog, hoses, etc, go zipping by every day. It never bothered this fish, who healed up really nice. Ended up being a male, who is paired with another black, producing nice spawns of fish with a good temperment.

When breeding the angels do they need a certain type of plant e.g. leaves the droop at 30 deg. also do the young need to be with the parents after hatching so they feed from the micro organisims on there scales?

Or is it just a cas once they lay the eggs i could move them out into a fry tank.

I have a number of glass rods which I lean at an angle against the side of the breeding tank, and usually the fish use these to spawn on. I only keep one pair of fish per tank, and have found that after a couple of trial runs, the adults make good parents, so I tend to leave the young with them. If there are other fish in the tank, it may be wise to seperate the young to stop them becoming a tasty morsel for the other fish.

I remember seeing the parents in our Aquatic club picking the eggs up then moving them around. then after a few days the eggs were 1/3 of the amount layed.

What is the percentage you would normally get once they start breeding.

Also once they lay how long is it before they lay again?
