I'm living in Petersfield and want to start investigating the LFSs this weekend, Any suggestions?

The only difficulty is I have no car so preferably ones within walking distance of stations... if such a thing exists :S

TIA
Helen

I would really recommend Maidenhead Aquatics if there is one near you. You are in Petersfield and I know they have shops in Guildford, Farnham and Havant. Their website is http://www.fishkeeper.co.uk

I patronise the store in Hicksted (10 miles north of Brighton) and they are FANTASTIC. I've been round so many aquatics places with my mum in Devon as she has just set up her first tank and we've seen a lot of poor places I can tell you. My local store has become a kind of benchmark and I have to say nowhere else I've seen has measured up in terms of fish quality, range and staff helpfulness. Well worth a trip if you can make the journey by train. My mum is even considering making all her purchases here when she visits and transporting them 4 hours back to Devon.

That's brilliant I work in G'ford and my Boyriend works in Havant, we can check them both out this weekend and have great fun drooling over all the cool fishys and kit (as I said no tank yet so can't impulse buy any fish!)

That's handy! Enjoy!

I would also recommend Maidenhead Aquatics, there stores around me are excellent
Each one specialises in different fish that the employees likes, two around me love Discus, so they have loads of them, regularly having a tank with discus that have already bred looking after the fry, very kl to watch.

I agree!! maidenhead is great, my local stores were Dartford and Orpington, now I've moved its the Bourne End one or the larger Iver store. All the staff know what they are doing and they always have some lovely display tanks. The Dartford one has an enormously tall malawi tank and Iver has stingrays ;)

I'm really looking forward visiting the Havant one, it's specialism is Marine and Invertebrates. I've always wanted to get into fish keeping seriously and a marine aquarium is something I aspire to. I'm starting with a small cold-water tank mainly for price and space reasons... but who knows what the future will hold

Unfortunately the G'ford one is too far out of town, will have to persuade a friend with a car to get to that one at some point. :shifty:

Theres one that I seem to be more and more impressed with every time I go in there lately, along eastern road in farlington theres a sainsburys, theres an aquatics place in there. The fish are always very healthy and theres always something unusual in there that I've never seen before. Always loooads of stock :D The staff are helpful and knowledgable too.
..I bought a goldfish there today :D

Indeed, although it's best to go there as soon after they get their deliveries as possible. They also do a lot of equiptment (including Aquaclear HOBs, which you very rarely see in the UK).

MA in Havant doesn't really specialise in inverts, IMO, you've just got the usual amano and fan shrimp and then occasionally the huge growing nasty predatory things like crayfish and long armed shrimp. But the marine section usually has a fair amount (their display tank is awesome).

If you do a search for the thread Aloaring made in Chit Chat about LFS's in Portsmouth, there's a list in there with comments about each shop.
