recommend something a little larger

With a lot of small tetras (which seems to be the sort of fish that you are currently stocked with) you are limited with the types of large fish that you can add. Even if the larger fish aren't very aggressive they will eventually either kill, eat or harass the small fish to death. Even relatively non-aggressive fish such as Severums and Silver Dollars will bite other fish, especially smaller fish. If you want to add larger fish you should either find new homes for your small fish or live with the good chance of losing many of those smaller fish.

i'm finding new homes as we speak. let go the green tiger barbs and three rtbs so far.

You have a varied tank as it is, why don't you just increase some of your schools? They would exhibit better schooling behavior with greater numbers and become more noticeable in my opinion. Especially the kuhlie loaches, try keeping a school of six instead of just two, they will come out more and be more active. Ottos also do well in greater numbers. 10 or 12 schooling fish beat 6 any day, and looks better. Also take into account the size of the adult fish when stocking. It is better to understock than overstock.
