Try the fish shop, or aquarist society, or (depending how you feel about posting personal details on internet) try the buy/sell/swap board - you'll need to get it from the donor's tank to yours in an hour or so or the filter bacteria will start to die.

if kept in water from the tank and kept reasonably warm it'll be 12 hrs before the bacteria start to die off. so if sensibly transported the distance isn't all that crucial

where are you riddlebox? Someone may be able to help supply mature filter stuff and others can point you towards a better local fish shop.

Guppies are colorful, small and fun to watch. Basically, any kind of livebearer like a platy, molly or guppy would be great since they're calm and colorful. Stay away from sailfin mollies; they get big (5"+) and aggresive. Swordtails get pretty big too (3"), so I'd stick with smaller fish.
