My girlfriends parents keep fish casually and have around a 40gallon tank.Somewhere around that size.
Last week two kribensis were bought, assumedly one male one female (quite big colouration differences, one was larger, one had a spot on its dorsal fin...) Midweek one of the fish was found dead.
So naturally they bought another kribensis to replace it, but it has been observed that the one who has been there all along chases the new krib into a corner whenever it strays out!
Will this let up and they'll establish a pecking order and their own territories...or will it end in fish death?

This is how you sex kribensis:
Male: usually larger, longer/torpedo shaped, little red onhis belly, long flowing fins
Female: Small short body, deep belly, red/purple stomach, short rounded fins

Where it says my name, there is a pic of a female krib( my old female). Here is a bigger pic of a male and a female:
Female: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr...ispairingof.jpg
Male albino: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr.../albinomale.jpg

I personally love the albino photo, becasue it looks so detailed.

The new krib that was bought was almost white with little markings when we bought it, as soon as it got into the tank it turned into beutifull krib colours! It was quite amazing to watch and i really wasn't expecting it.
It seems odd that before there were two kribs, one had a spot on and the other didn't.Must just be variation.

By the fact one is markedly aggressive towards the other does that imply there are two females/males?

Their are many variations, which dont really dictate the sex (others may disagree). Do they both look like males or females? Can you post pics?

I can't post a picture as i won't be at my girlfriends untill the weekend, they look however both the same as the one in your avatar (female you said..right?)
They asked me if i can take one to stop it dying which they feel is inevitable but i had to refuse,i only have a 10gallon tank and that's not big enough by quite a bit in my view.Dillema!ha

Actually it is. People have been know to breed a pair in a 10g( i dont recommend it though, i say breeding minnimum of 15g). But a 10g for one is plenty big. Yes the one in my avatar is female. I say, take one, post the pic, and show it to me( or someone else), and we can sex it for you, if the other one looks the same, then they are both that sex.

i have had a pair of these spawn

Are those taeniatus(sp?)? They are lovely, i do remeber replying to your post a while ago. Got any pics of their fry?

If you think a 10g is suitably big enough for one i can take the fish and relieve it of it's misery! If it lives that long

I might need to make some adjustments to my tank however.I have a piece of bogwood but it wouldn't provide the cover that (from watching my girlfriends fish) the kribs seem to love.I've got a small light ordered off ebay so it wouldn't be long untill i could put some plants in so that should be ok.

Krib's love bogwood. Keep it in there. Try putting some pvc pipes in there( i know it dosent look natural, but kribs love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, plant wise, go with amazon sword plants: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Plants/Echinodorus.jpg, and Camboba: http://images.google.com/imgres?( the middle plant)imgurl=http://naturalaquariums.com/plants/riccia.JPG&imgrefurl=http://naturalaquariums.com/plants/riccia.html&h=389&w=581&sz=96&hl=en&start=11&tbnid=7r4FQnq6C-eboM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=134&prev=/images%3Fq%3Daquarium%2Bplants%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den
Both of those work great for krib's!!!!!!!!! And yes, you can keep a krib in a 10g.

Next issue-transporting the little krib...i live an 90mins away.

Thanks a lot...you've been a great help.I'm struggling with the planted side of things to be honest, i've ordered a cheap light that gives me 1-2 WPG, surely that should be enough to grow something!hah. But i'm also using sand substrate...something i read said plants won't root in it.Therefore any plants i get'll last about a week!

What diameter pipe would you reccomend?I guess i could hide the unnatural look with some moss...

1/2 inch to a inch, dpeneding on the size of your krib. If it is a female, i would either suggest getting it a male, or some company by means of other dwarfs, or livebearer( maybe tetra's, but they may be eaten). If she dosent start eating at first, then wait and if still no eating, keep some frozen brine shrimp on hand, becasue i have never known a krib to decline brine shrimp! She will take the ride fine. What you should do, is get a rather large bag, and fill most up w/ water, so she dosent run out of air. Any thing else? I know that my light is a cheapy sun-glow by hagen, which really shouldnt keep anything alive, but i have a thriving amazon sword plant, and 4 thriving grss-type plants. Ohhh, your welcome, and have a happy thanksgiving( turkey day)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have white cloud mountain minnows in there at the moment...they're about the same size and temprement as tetra's so they should be fine i guess. (i know minnows prefer cooler temperatures but they can live in tropical im assured).

I've got frozen bloodworm in the freezer...i've never seen any fish turn their noses up to those either!hah

Lol, i have never fed frozen bloodworms!!!!!! Only the freeze dried ones, and my fish never ate those!!!!!!! Make sure yuou post pic's!!!!!!!!
