Good afternoon all...

Last week i bought my first 2 real plants upon the advice of the salesman at M.A, Swansea. He told me to take them out of the small black plastic pots they were in, but i can't remember if he mentioned anything about that yellow 'cotton wool' type material that are surrounding their roots....

Do i remove all of this and carefully plant the roots into my gravel? The gravel i have are more like small stones really, probable 2/3 mm in size on average....will this make a difference if i plant them into it? Or would i be better off leaving them as they are in this 'cotton wool' material?

As always, any help highly appreciated,
Terry.

Hi,

Would you be able to post a pic of the plants you`ve bought? Sometimes plants sold as aquatic actually aren`t and can have a detrimental affect on the water quality of your tank. I`mnot saying this is the case with yours but it`s always best to check.

I previously had a very heavily planted tank and have always been advised to gently remove the materials that surround the roots by easing it way under running water. I`ve had gravel and sand in my tanks and have had no problems planting with either. IF you find the gravel depth isn`t deep enough to hold the plant stable, you could always possibly add a bit more or think about changing to sand ;)

Highly appreciate the quick reply elisew, thank you! Unfortunately, the mother-in-law has our camera at the moment out in Egypt (i hear it's nice out there this time of year :D ) but i shall take a picture as soon as i can.

My gravel depth is easily 2/3 cm, but for the moment i shall hang on.

again, many thanks,
Terry.
