I wouldn't blame the LFS. I mean they told you wrong, so just don't follow their advise. I learned two things a long time ago. Don't trust anyone's advise; only research. And don't buy something that catches your eye at the store; go back home, look it up, and then come back for it if you really want it.

What other fish do have in the tank ? What size is the tank ?

Gourmai's are prone to bacterial disease and usually either skittish or mean. That's my experience with them anyway.

Well if you can't have all of what you want in 1 tank, then set up more tanks!!! That's what I'm doing....whether my hubby realizes it or not If you can't set more up, then have the one you want the most and build around that
