Hmmmm, i put my real plants in and they seemed ok.
Now it looks like they took a fancy and munched some of them. But some are ok just dont seem to be doing too good.
I put food in, plenty of light, no airstone to take away too much CO2.

I've got a blue tube, and a white 'day light' tube.

As for types im not 100% sure. I kinda bought em and put them in. I've taken out the dodgy ones now. They dont seem to have eaten the grass type ones or big leaved fern type.

In the pic, the ones behind the bamboo havnt been eaten, nor the big thick green leaved ones. But the other have taken their fancy. Specially the ones on far left/right (with purple)

Rodders...I think you might want to post this in the plant section. I can tell you that the blue tube sounds actinic and is used mostly for reef tanks/corals. The recommendation is 2-5 watts of light per gallon. The colored plants probably require a lot of light. Also, certain plants require certain types of water hardness and pH. I think the first things you have to do is:
1) calculate your needed wattage
2) ID your plants and find out what water conditions you need
3) check your light...sounds like it's a marine light (assuming this is a freshwater tank)

..just a start. SH
