O.k, first of all, I am getting rid of my Guppy, Platy, and the fry (to the LFS). This will leave my 10 gallon tank with 1 single neon tetra. I wanna re stock my tank, and I was wondering what a good combo would be. Scratch out livebearers cause I don't like them. Put in Tetras, cause I like Tetras best. I wanna make this a tetra tank.

Now, there is a problem. I have a drug addiction. Neon tetras are the drug and buying them is by addictoin. The problem is, they always die, and are a waste of money (according to several people). Are there any fish I can find that are just as good as neons or if anything, better? Besides Cardinal tetras. Or should I just let my instincts buy the neons?

Buy at least another 5 Neons for the one you have as they need to be in groups. Also maybe find another source to buy them from as in my experience they are hardy enough to survive cycling.

Well, I have learned that purchasing neons from petsmart was not the greatest idea. I think that might have had something to do with their death, cause I did see a few dead neons in the tank, but I figured it was like that with all tanks. I am gonna get the 5 other neons later today. My anti social neon is depressed without his own kind.

I was also thinking of glow light tetras with the neons.

If you buy from somewhere like petsmart the neons will be extremely inbred as well as not being in top condition.

Try finding a local fish shop, they will be able to advice you much better.

Look into Penguin and Black Neon Tetras, you may like them.

Also, You may want to consider a small trio of ottos or corys for the bottom of the tank.

Wait, how big are ottos? I don't like cories. How about THIS!

2 black neons
2 penguins
2 cardinals
2 neons
2 Ottos (which are the catfish like thingies)

that wouldn't spike ammonia or nitrites or nitrates or PH or the ozone layer or anything like that, would it?

If thats whats up, then thats how I'm stocking it.

I'm also considering plants. Any LFS is gonna sell plants, right?

Is the tank cycled? If so you cango ahead and add fish. I'd get more of one type of tetra than a bunch of different ones. get 4-5 more neons, and some black neons (3-4), which are very nice. Don't buy from petsmart, find yourself a proper LFS. This should pretty much push your stocking limits to their max for a 10 gallon tank.

I think you could get 5 of each tetra + 3 ottos in a 10G tank. That would look great :)

Ben
Well I don't know about that cause black neons get quite a bit bigger than regular neons. Going by the "one inch per gallon rule" you coul get about 4-5 neons, 3-4 black neons and maybe an oto or 2 but that would be pushing it. Later when your tank is mature you can double the stock.
