Hi all,

Not really a beginner as I have been keeping and breeding fish for nearly six years now...for my sins lol!

My 5 footer 40 gallon used to be a community breeding tank but slowly it emptied due to a bad choice on my behalf as a true noob to the hobby all those years ago by choosing a syno catfish who grew from one inch to a mighty nine inches...and a highly aggressive breeding pair of Angels.

In the end I didn't have the heart to re-home him so allowed him to have free roam of the tank himself and re-homed/housed the remaining others sadly he passed on recently so I have an empty tank that I have decided to re-stock as a community tank.

I'm going to completely take down the tank, clean it, change from gravel to sand, fully plant it and then run a fishless cycle.

For stock, i'm planning to keep it simple....

12 Neon Tetra
6 Cories

Perhaps some shrimp...and not sure what else...

And thats about as much as I have thought of so far, I adore neon's and think they look fantastic in a large shoal...quite tempted to go old school with some livebearers as I do love guppies and their crazy ways but i'll need to do some thinking first...

So I wondered if anyone had any advice or thoughts as to what would make my 40 gallon that little bit more special? Just really looking for ideas just now, something to inspire me, after loosing my catfish I was going to give up (after 2 visits to the fish specialist vet and numerous medications, salt baths etc I was destroyed when my catfish died) but after reading through this site and looking at some of your tanks its inspired me again.

Must say, not looking forward to going through the fishless cycle again....hopefully shouldn't take as long this time (took me THREE months last time lol) I've been feeding my filters with ammonia since my boy died to keep them going.

Thanks in advance.
