how do i "plant" new java fern?? some of the larger leaves have long roots and a few small leafs.

Get some cotton and tie the base of the plant to some ornament in your aquarium, like wood or rock. Java ferns don't do well planted in the substrate, they wrap their roots around objects and like to have them exposed to open water.
