Hello

i have a 180litre tank with 13 dwarf neon rainbows and randomly i had 6 die for no apparent reason in the space of 48 hours.

all were healthy and have been fine for ages.
i checked the ammonia and that was fine.

i checked the water with the test kit and ph was quite low at around 6 and nitrites n nitrates were a bit high then normal.

so i have changed about 50-60% of the water and the ph is on about 7.5 now and nitrites n nitrates are now on 0 and ammonia is 0.

would this have been a reason why the fishes died. i did the water change yesterday and the last time i changed the water before was a week before.

any ideas.

thank. all other fish in the tank seem to be fine. its just the rainbows

thanks any help is much appreaciated.

just to note i have sand subrate with alot of slate rocks and bog wood.
tank has been running for about 4 months and never have problems with ammonia. water changes are at least 50% weekly
tank inhabitants are listed below.
although recently added a few more corys and 5 micro neon tetras.
rainbows i have had since ive had the tank and the 5 micro neons and the extra corys were added about 1 and a half weeks ago.

Could be old age, if you've had them a while and because not many people seem to like the look of them in the LFS, they dont sell quickly, so you dont know how old they were to start with.

Having said that, small amounts of nitrIte could be the cause, along with the low ph. Did they show any signs at all before dying that there was something wrong, swollen or sunken stomachs? Any signs of fungus, particularly around the mouth (as rainbows are prone to columnaris)?

Ive recently lost 3 female praecox, they seem to slow down for a few days, show no interest, then die, nothing wrong with my water or any other fish in the tank, so its just one of those things.

well im not sure how old they were so could be that. no signs of slowing down. the other rainbows were fine and they were relatively smaller then the other ones. just thought it was a bit random for 6 to die at the same time. no signs of struggling to breath or anything like that.

strange.. do yours tend to swim at the bottom or top.

All over, but the few that died off, starting staying near the top for a week or so before hand, not right at the top, just hoovering around near it.
