Hi - I'm currently treating my tank for fin rot, 3 guppys and a swordtail have it, the sword and 2 of the guppys look aas though they're making a good recovery but the 3rd guppy was a bit more shredded than the rest and isn't showing any signs of getting better. He's still swimming about and eating but looks like he's been through the wars.

I've been treating with myxazin and with 2 does to go, I've ran out!! I'm not convinced or it's effectiveness anyway so was going to change to melafix. On the myxazin bottle it says to allow 48 hours before changing to another treatment, the last treatment was this morning so if I allow the 48 hours I can start the melafix on Sat morn. I'm concerned as to whther the guppy would survive til then. Moving him to an isolation tank isn't an option as I don't have one ready. I have a fishless tank but it's right in the middle of the nitrogen cycle and still showing nitrites, so moving him there would def finish him off.

Would adding salt help in the meantime? I have a plec and rainbow shark in the same tank and not sure how they would tolerate the salt.

Thanks.

I might be wrong - but I think adding melafix should be ok.
Although I don't think it is going to cure finrot, you need to get some more meds to that treat it.

Fins won't mend so good in a cycling tank.
With livebeares finrot and be a secondary infection with something else going off with the fish.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. The guppy with the worst rot is simming a little free-er today, the tank is looking much cleaner, I've started with the melafix and will do another water change later today. The problem is basically the tank is overstocked, the fish have been recently moved, as has the tank, and they're stressed out. I need to get rid of some fish but don't want to move them too soon so they don't get stressed out again!

I've actually used myxazyn and melafix together. Melafix isn't a med a such in that it's active ingredient, aloe vera, is a plant extract. I have had good results with it so it should be ok.
