I read somewhere that I could keep a m and f blue ram in a 10gal if I stayed on top of tank maint. and only put in a few small tetreas (amber). But I read the pinned topic up there and it says that 20 is the smallest you should go. So my question is ...

Is there anyway that if I have a lot of places to hide in the back and swim room up front, use peat for the water, never over stock, pay close attention to the fish, add both at the same time and do weekly water changes that this ram would be ok in a 10 ?

I had 2 apistos in the 10 for a bit they seemed ok but it was just a stopping point on the way to the big tank.

I was asking about the same thing a while ago and I was told it can be done. Live planted tank is best. You can have neons or Cardinals -I am not sure what you mean by amber but am sure any small, non-agressive tetra will be ok with them.

the amber tetras are non-agressive and tiny they don't get to the size of a green tetra . I have been told they are a bit on the rare side, but you never know they may be rare here but a common thing somewhere else. I think I'm going to go for it, the rams I mean. Did you set up a 10 gal with rams fish buddy ?? How did it go ?

I think you should be OK,as long as you do the things you say you would. Now,having that in mind, remember that the bigger the fish tank the better. Not only 'cause of the space, but the fact that the bigger the tank, the less manteinance it requires. This last point is very important because even though rams are not as delicate as many people believe, and will adjust to just about any reasonable changes in H2O conditions, they will not take 'sudden' perimeter changes well.Yes they will adjust to anything, but 'gradually'.
That I think,is the reason why people say a 20 US gallon is the smallest tank you should keep a pair of these gorgeous fish in.

Rams only get to be 2 inches long tops. The female @ 1 1/2 inches. I can not see how they could not live in a 10 gallon tank? They are not a dirty fish? I would say you'll be fine.

I have rams, but keep them in a 55 gallon. I find them to be quite easy to care for. Yet I understand they are quite sensitive to water changes and water quality. Keep that water clean, have a good bio filter and you should have no trouble at all.

No doubt Steve, rams gotta be some of the most beautiful and interesting tropical fish out there.Personally,my German blues are my favorite pair. The male is the best parent among all the other cichlids I keep. And as you said, full of personality and character.
