Hey peeps just a daft question about rams :D

Why is there a breed called the "German" ram are they from germany (i don`t think so) and also. ... Why are they such a freaking b*gger to keep  lol

I had 2 of these sons of guns and they are now pan bread :rip:

Hmm... i have two and they do just fine. ive had no problems with them except for ick but i love them they are awsome! ive heard form other people that they cannot keep them theyd love to but just acnt keep them alive but ive had mine for a couple of weeks now and they are fine.

German rams are so called because they have been captive bred in Germany. They are a hardier strain than their wild caught counterparts and should be easier to keep alive.

I've had 4 rams. 2 killed each other before I could separate them, one (my gorgeous long fin) got fin rot and I couldn't fix it but my 4th ram is doing VERY well. She has decided she is in charge of knowing EVERYTHING that goes on in the tank

I've had one pair for 2 months now im my 46 gallon and another pair in my 20 long for about a month....i have heard of other people keeping them and having them die from apparently nothing within the first 6 months but have not experienced that myself. one pair was bought from a very good local fish store, the other pair from a decent chain store....needless to say they were the only pair at the lfs and in great condition ....and 1/4 of the ones on sale at the chain store died within their first week there.

it seems to be an issue of water quality...keeping parameters right...and not letting them catch a disease (and if they do getting rid of it asap)...good luck, they are one of the most interesting species out there IMO!

My sister lost four rams before she gave up trying to keep them. I have two "Dutch" blue rams which are doing great. I have had them for 4 months now, they are active, have voracious appetites, and were left untouched by an outbreak of ich I went through a month ago.

wow mine have ick right now, but they act normal. almost everyone tells me that rams are hard to keep but i have not had any trouble with mine, only that i wish theyd be more colorful. at first i thouhgt mine were pretty colorful but then i saw a pic of someone else's and their's were amazing. but mine are still pretty i love em!
whats the diff. between dutch rams and german rams

I'm planning on getting some. For those that have kept both, are they more difficult than discus? Easier, or equally difficult? This way I will know if I am ready for them as I have kept discus witha degree of success. If they are harder I won't get any.

Rams are not hard to keep at all
:p An average degree of success. I was not able to keep more than one alive at once, as the first one I had lived for a month before I got my second one which killed it. then the second one lived with meup until yesterday when I returned it to the LFS. Well if rams are that easy I guess I'll get them

Your first one suffered from 2 different diseases prior to its death  .

Also, the second one had ick b4 being returned, didn't it?

Also, these fish that could live for years, yours lasted a month. Not average, actually far from it

This is why sometimes I just use this " ", cause when I state your history you get upset.

 They are also bred for color morphs (blue, gold, etc)

hi all,

i have recently returned from a trip to germany, and the rams i saw there were a truely amazing colour, much much deeper blue than anything i have seen here in u.k.
i asked at my local fish outlet who confirmed to me the german strain is much more vivid opposed to the 'maylasian' german rams we normally get in the shops.

i am hoping that a friend in the forces can bring some home for me on his next leave!!

true german blue rams are truelly AWESOME !!!!!!!!!

john

hi all again,,

i have recently purchased a couple of blue rams and a couple of gold rams, all of which are looking more and more like females!!! :( ..

if anybody lives in or near the sussex area of uk and knows of somewhere i can get some males i would appreciate it.

thanks again,

john

The German blue rams are by far the most beautiful rams available.Of course they get that name for being bred in Germany for hardiness, shape and definately that gorgeous coloration.
I don't find rams to be a very hard fish to keep, and will get used to many H2O conditios,as long as the water is kept clean, and the changes take place over a reasonable amount of time. For instance if I bring a new ram to my already stablished tank,it will take me about an hour to condition this fish to its new environment.

This is my beautiful german blue male swimming next to my pleco.
