Hi I'm new here and have a 30 gallon tall (hex) which has been running stable for some time. Water params are good, if they weren't the rams wouldn't have hesitated to let me know by dying or getting sick very fast. lol

My question is in regard to dwarf puffers. I made the mistake of indulging my girlfriend a few weeks ago and getting two ''buddies'' for my dwarf puffer who's had my 5 gallon to himself for...forever. Needless to say what I anticipated would happen happened despite what the LFS employee told my girlfriend. 'Blimpie' is harassing the crap out of the new guys, which may lead to their death.

I'm thinking of moving the celebes rainbows out of my 30 gallon and putting the puffers in there, but don't know how well they'll mix with the rams. The rams aren't what worry me its whether or not the puffers will at any point tear them apart as I've read they will attack a fish much larger than themselves. I do know that once Blimpie is introduced to -new- territory he won't continue being so aggressive to the other puffers.

I have a friend who has wanted my rainbows for some time and knows how to take care of fish so I wouldn't have a guilty conscience seeing them go if it means saving some puffers.

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm.. its a tough question. DP's will nip at anything even if its alot larger, but really not sure if it will work.
If theres alot of plant cover and food for the dp's then they would be less aggressive towards one another.

You could try it, but keep an eye on them. If they start nipping at your ram, id either buy another tank or return them to the pet shop.

Its all about trial and error, all fish are different, some combinations will work while others won't.

They might be fine for a bit but I have a feeling the Puffers will end up nipping their fins off.

Thanks for your advice, all. :)

I decided to keep the puffers at bay by adding more dense plantings and upgrading my lighting so they aren't staring each other in the face all day. It seems to be working..for now...and I have the peace of mind knowing my rams are safe in their own tank. lol

I'm sure the aggression was partially just the mature fish thinking that they own the tank, and that new fish has invaded their territory.
