Okay, so I originally had one male Blue Ram and bought a female about a week ago. The male is nearly double the size of the female but I know this is common.

I moved them both to their own 10 gallon tank with the intention of eventually breeding them so I added a few plants, then a peice of bogwood and three plant pots, all at different angles. They both seem to prefer one of the the plant pots - the one that is just sitting on the gravel.

So I was watching them yesterday night and I wasn't sure if they were showing spawning behaviour. The male would sit in his plant pot, occasionally pecking at the sides and maybe sitting on the bottom. Then the female would come along and when he saw her he would either swim off and she would 'guard' the pot as such, or they would both sort of chase each other and peck eachother occasionally - but not aggresively. There are no eggs or nothing.

Yes, the water is soft and acidic.

Is this spawning/pairing behaviour or just naturally what Rams do?

the male has his territory and the other one is being told off for coming too close. They will probably stuff around for a couple of weeks before laying eggs on top of the flower pot.

There's definately no eggs. The male sort of guards his pot although he does come out quite a lot. The female is always swimming about .

When the male does see the female though, he sort of goes up to her and they sometimes chase or circle eachother and peck a little or the male just swims off and the female sort of guards the pot instead until the male comes back but he is never out as long as the female is.
