Rams and Shelldwellers?

I finally pretty much decided to get at least one blue ram (maybe a pair, I don't know) for my thirty gallon. Then I was cruising around in the forum and all of a sudden I'm seeing things about shelldwellers. First I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about them and two I was wondering if they would be okay in my tank?

Shell Dwelling cichlids (neolamprologus, lamprologus species) are rift lake cichlids from tanganyika. The water requirements for these fish are completely opposite of the required water parameters for most new world species.

As a rule you should never mix african cichlids with american cichlids. It has bad news written all over it...

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure where they were from or anything, I just saw a pic or two and couldn't really find anything about them. So, no dwellers for me....
