Is it possible to have only female or only male dwarf cichlids or rams? I'm interested in adding maybe 6 to my 46 gallon tank but don't want to worry about breeding (not ready to handle fry as of yet!)

Only male would be a bad idea, and it could be with females too.

I wouldn't worry about fry too much. Let the parents handle it and if they get eaten then you don't need to worry. If they don't then you'll have extra fish without the hassle of caring for them.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the input. I don't have any special fry food. I don't suppose they would survive with regular flake and pellet anyways?

If you're lucky the parents would take care of it. And if flakes are small enough they can be eaten. But if you're not ready to help things along, just let mature take it's course.

I added 1 Male and 1 female Bolivian Rams to my 100 gallon which had 10 Rotkeil fry, a 5" Blue Acara and a Male German Blue Ram.

Inside 24 hours after lots of fighting, the German Blue, which i have had for a few years was dead.

So these things fight! trust me.

Just so you know I am a newbie breeding cichlid owner and I've been seeing my HRP parents chewing pellets, flakes, bloodworm etc and spitting it out for the fry which have only just started free swimming....I am sure the parents, if you had any, would cater for the fry needs just as they do in the wild. The other thing I have witnessed is the Mum disturbing the sand to expose what I can only guess are micro organisms for the fry to eat (like in my sig pic). All very nice to see :)

Awesome picture! And appreciate the advice. I guess I won't have to worry too much about feeding the frys then.
