I went to LFS yesterday for new stock saw the ram. Never seen one before and I just had to have em.

I think it is a blue one

Thing is there were only 2 left in the tank and they seemed to be fighting. So I decided to buy 1 and the guy didn't seem to think this was a problem.

Thing is I am a little worried about him being on his own. If it's a he I dunno how tell difference? any help?

Paul.

Rams do seem to do better in pairs, but 2 females will fight (I don't know about 2 males). There have been several threads here lately about sexing blue rams. You can also do a general internet search for "sexing blue rams" and get some good info.

I had 2 females in a 10g with plenty of hiding spaces and it was still big trouble, I lost both of them. Then, I got 1 female (the rest looked like females too so I just got the one) and for that week she did seem very lonely. When the lfs got their next fish shipment in, I went and got her a male buddy and she has been much happier since. He's still pretty timid (just got him Friday) but they aren't fighting at all.

Yeah, they do better in pairs. And about two males being together......Even worse than the two females, for they are more territorial and aggresive than the smaller females.
It's better to keep them in a male for each female ratio. Now if you have a bigger tank you may keep others.

Thanks for the help.

I'm guessing they were 2 males as mine has, which I didn't notice, torn fins. I guess I will ahe to keep a look out for him a lady then and let him have his fun.

Will his fins heal?

Paul.

Torn fins usually heal depending on food supply(live food and frozen is better for the protein content)and quality of the water.
If you have a male ram then you already know how beautiful they are, wait 'till you see your male during spawning, they are simply amazing. The colors become more vivid and they get an.....How can I put it?......Yeah,they do show an attitude.
