Please help, I am worried about my ram and I have no idea what could be wrong.

I only got him two days ago, as it turned out that my other two rams were female. He looked healthy in my lfs. When I added him to the tank all was fine, he swam around and checked out the females. Yesterday he started hanging around over the filter, barely moving. And this morning his fins look like this and he is almost motionless.

I have trapped him for the picture, but will let him go if you think it is better.

Anyway, I have no idea what is wrong, he looked so happy and healthy and now this :(

Stats are:
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 5

All other tank inhabitants are fine and there have been no other deaths or emergencies. I am wondering if he could simply be stressed???

Oh no! He is lying on his side now, not able to get upright anymore :(

What to do? Is there any hope or should I euthanize him to stop his suffering?

I'm afraid he does look pretty far gone. Your water looks fine from those results, but it's always worth doing a big water change if you have fish that aren't 'right'.

What temperature is your tank at? Rams do need it quite warm; around 28°C/82°F. You could do your water change with water slightly warmer than the tank and see if that helps at all.

If not, then maybe euthanasia, but it would have to be your call. Do you have clove oil available? That's the most humane way, in most people's opinion.

Thanks for your reply. I am sad to say that he has died :( After I wrote the message I had to make dinner for the family and when I finished and checked up on him he was gone. I hope it didn't hurt him too much. I didn't have clove oil, but really need to stock some in case I ever had such a situation again (hopefully not for a long time).

Water is 28 at all times. I really don't know what could have caused this. I hope it's a one off, maybe he was just stressed, other rams seem happy enough and they have been thriving in my tank.

Hate it when a fish dies. I get so attached to them :(

Rams are notoriously difficult; I'm sorry for your loss :-(
