Hi, my ram and possibly some other fish have finrot, either that or the prawn has been nipping at their fins which is highly possible.

If it is finrot, how do I make up a saltbath? how much salt to 1 litre of water?
For how long?
Id prefer not to use chemicals, is there anything I can feed for better fin regrowth?

hi matchu, while I cant comment on the finrot (no personal experience), I can comment on fin regrowth MELAFIX :flex: , it was reccommeneded to me after I had an Angel badly mauled, after adding it to the water the angels finnage was back to about 90% percent in about a week (from less than 50%, with lots of tears).

PS @ Wilder - Why link the same article on two different sites? :dunno:

Thanks for the help guys, gave a salt bath, will buy some melafix soon, but some sites suggest it only promotes regrowth, doesnt solve the problem.

If its the prawn nipping theres only on eway to fix that, as for the melafix I was only suggesting for the regrowth aspect, although as its derived from tea tree oil it MAY have anibacterial assistance for your fish and definetly shouldn't harm them.

As for the original cause of the problem most reference source's place water quality as the main cause of finrot etc unless it has set in after something else cause's the original damage then fin rot can set it with or with bad water quality

Yeah it could be the water, but i think its more to do with stress, the other rams really been having a go at him recently :(

other male rams?? having males together could lead to problems...generally speaking the weaker of the males will be abused without end...forcing him to hide all the time and you will often times find the abused one near the top of the tank in a corner as far away from the other male(s) as possible...might i suggest buying a female or two to spread out aggression?

I've tried, but none of the fish shops round here have females :(

They seem to be pally for a bit then one picks on the other :(

one of the males may need to go back if you cannot find a female...even tons of structures probably wont keep him hidden for too long from the dominant male

I've just started treating my Platies with Melafix to help repair their damaged fins - only started it today, but I'll let you know if it's any good!
