Ram Pairs

I've been researching different fish that we could possibly get for our tank once it's done cycling.
I read the stickied topic on Rams, but didn't see this particular thing mentioned.

I'd like to get 2, but I don't want to get a male and female since I wouldn't want them to terrorize other fish if they mated successfully.
So would 2 males or 2 females be ok instead of male & female?

And in that sticky topic.. it said that they do prefer to be in pairs, but would getting only 1 be that bad?

Male and Female is the only way to go im afraid, ive tried 2 males and 2 females before with no success. One becomes dominant and terrorises the other. If they do spawn its not like a Krib pair, Rams are far more docile.

Yeah i agree, they have to be of opposite sex.

Oh dern..... well other than aggression if they did end up spawning.. we also wouldn't have anywhere to put the fry.

Think one on it's own would be ok?

Thank you for the info... glad I asked or we would've probably have ended up with a dead fish from being bullied (whenever we got them).

Yeah you can keep one by itself. I had a single male in one of my tanks for a while and he did great, and had bright colors all the time. He was also very passive, never would hurt a fly. It is a shame you can only keep one though, they are really cool to watch when they settle little territory and mating disputes.

Yeah it would be nice to get a pair, but fiance really doesn't want anymore tanks right now and of course we would need them if the pair decided to spawn successfully. Maybe further down the road whenever we move I can convince him to get a larger tank and we can get a pair then
