I just got a 65 gal tank with basic tropical fish in it (mollies, platy's..etc) I really want some Rams and i read they are peaceful, would they be ok in my 65 gal with my mollies etc?

i moved the to the new world section as these are south american fish not african.

rams are peaceful fish. they are classified as dwarfs. their natural habitat is among plants and large rocks. they will be more comfortable if they have hiding places. they like to lay their eggs on flat surfaces. so if you are intending to have them spawn add a peice of slate to the aquarium. females can be distinguished by the pink/purple spot on their belly when they mature.

hopefully ramesses will be along to share some of her knowledge and excellent pics of her rams.

Hi Whiskerz, yes they are south american cichlids, they are peaceful.....for the most part.Could become overly aggresive while starting a family, though.
To avoid any kind of problems with other species make sure to provide some plants and hidding places they can claim their own. They will stay for the most part at the middle or bottom part of your tank.
Like Fish R Great said, they need their own type of H2O conditions which are a bit different from livebeares such as mollies,so this is something to concider.

PS....semper fi-------ramesses was an egyptian pharoah,as a matter of fact is belived to be "pharoah" from the exodus. So I know the name sounds weird, but I am a male.  :p :D

hi, im the owner of the 65 gallon tank and i was at whiskerz house when i asked her to post ... what type of water parameters are we talking ... i just bought a test kit that tests (pH, Alkalinity, Hardness, Nitrite and Nitrate) and im in the process of getting them some comfort zones, im slowly getting sick of looking at the fish i see overstocked at ever LFS so im trying to get into something new (ie mollies etc), ive been doing some research on rams and they seem like their the only chiclid that wont make meals of the fish i have in there now, so if you can give me the proper water settings i'll start with working on that 1st off, if some of the fish i have in there now start to act weird when i work on the water i can always give them to Whiskerz :p
