One of my new bolivian rams is constantly chasing the other one around the tank. Now, when I say constantly, I don't mean all the time, but rather whenever he sees the other one, he sort of chases him and nips his fin and then just swims away. Now, I know that they ARE cichlids and this is normal behaviour, however I'm a bit worried of the one being chased being under too much stress, which would cause him to die. So I was wondering if I should get another Ram as a diverter, you know, so that the bully has two to annoy, and would reduce the stress for both fish? I have a 20 gallon aquarium and if it was bigger, I would do it without a question, but I don't want to overcrowd my aquarium so I'm asking you.

I had the same problem with my Bolivian Rams.
Now that they have matured a little one has developed longer tail fins while the other hasn't, so i think i've got a male and a female.

Even so they still fight. One constantly chases the other whenever they seem to be in each others line of sight.

That is however until I hand fed the ram that was being bullied, now he (believe it or not) seems to be alot tougher and now fights back.

At the moment the two of them seem to have some sort of mutual respect for one another and will only really fight whenever it is feeding time or if they approach into each others territory.

I dont know if it was because I hand fed the bullied one that the fighting calmed down or whether they just matured / got used to each other.

Well, I know I'd rather try to hand-feed my rams than get a third, but mine are fairly mature, 2", and the strings at the tips of one's fins are starting to grow (not sure what else to call it ;) ). But I do know that mine are both males with the elongated 3rd spine of the dorsal fin. Now, I actaully got mine 3 days ago, however it doesn't really seem like they're accepting food. I fed them flakes and bloodworms, but they do not swim to the surface, in fact, i doubt they notice the food. They wait for the food to float down and then snatch it up, and with attitude. They usually spit the flake food out. Any ideas on how i could get them to take food more actively?

I usually feed my sinking waffers which I need to break up into smaller pieces so they can eat them. My rams are starting to accept flake food now and even shoot up to the surface to grab some.

I'd give them more time, they're probably still settling in.

Paul.

Alright well thank you very much for your help, and thankfully i do have some sinking pellets around, so I will try those out :D
