Raising Snails

I am trying to raise pest snails to feed to my SAP. I've got a 2 gallon hex tank with a couple of danios in it and plant in it, along with a bunch of snails. What type of substrate would you recommend, sand or gravel? I am planning on using sand, but thought the gravel might be good, so the baby snails could fall down between the rocks and not be bothered.

Gravle is deffinitly preffered, However, I don't think a 2 gallon will be enought to raise snails for a puffer, and danios deffinitly don't belong in any standard hex, especially a 2 gallon hex.
