i have 7 rosy barb fry in a breeder box. the largest is around 1" and the smallest is around 0.5". they've all been in the breeder for a while now.

i'm planning on setting up a divider for them when the smallest fry reaches 1". would that be ok or will it stunt their growth? the breeder is in a 20g long tank.

small environments will stunt their growth to some degree however doing daily partial water changes will help to overcome this a fair bit.

but there's water circulation through small slits on two sides of the breeder box. wouldn't that help offset the fact that they're in a small enclosed space?

here's a picture of the breeder box:

I did an experiment once. I took half of a batch of platy fry and put them in a breeder and the rest in a 6 gallon. The ones in the 6 gallon grew much faster. I didn't see any signs of "stunting" or developmental problems, though. They all ended up healthy. So I'd say that keeping them in a breeder for a little while, maybe until they're about 3 weeks old, is fine. But if you want them to thrive and grow faster, put them in a bigger tank.

Too small..... Raise fry in larger tanks, frequent small waterchanges, pay attention to cleanliness and provide a varied diet.
