Hi,
I added a few new fish on Wednesday, specifically 3 tuxedo platies and 3 sunset platies.

The ammonia was up to about 0.5ppm the next day, and has remained static ever since (nitrite seems to be 0ppm).

As the ammonia doesn't seem to be rising, I am inclined to leave the tank alone, but I did consider doing a water change, just to clear out the excess ammonia.

I assume that the tank will probably get back down to 0ppm in the next few days, but will that level of ammonia be high enough to do any damage in the meantime?

As always, any advice would be much appreciated.

yes do a water change, ammonia can hurt the fish if left alone, how long has the tank been cycled?

Seems peculiar that nitrite has stayed down but not ammonia. I'd do a water change as it can only help the situation.

Any ammonia can cause long term damge to the fish, so you want to do a water change to get it down to at least 0.25ppm or below.

Thanks. I completed the fishless cycle just over 5 weeks ago.

just probably a little spike because of adding more fish maybe, but as said by others as well, water change will not hurt, but leaving as is could do long term damage to fish

Thanks for all of the advice.

I've just changed 60L of water. Assuming that the normal quantity is actually about 70L, then that should be about an 85% change.

I'll check the levels again in an hour.

Thanks again.

I checked the water at midday today, and the ammonia is somewhere between 0 and 0.25ppm, so it seems under control.

Thanks again for the advice.

14 Platies and 5 Mollies sounds an awful lot of fish for an 80l tank, if your signature is correct!

But back to your reading at midday today, if the colour of the test result did not convince you that ammonia was 0, you ought to be doing another big water change (>50%) as of 90 minutes ago. ;)
