I have some rainwater collection points in my garden and in most small containers are live insect lavae. Could this be intrduced to the tropical tank as food in small ammounts. Perhaps they would die from the temp. change or I could have unknown insects in the house. Has anybody tried this. I have platies and loaches.

ive done this in the past and the fish loved it and i had no illaffects to my water or fish so i dont see a problem with it :D

Hi,
As long as the water has no fish present (as a source of infection or parasites) and is not polluted then the larvae should be fine. I have a water butt teeming with mosquito larvae and the fish love them as an occasional treat. Don't put in too many though as any that escape being eaten could hatch out.

Cheers

Yeah i've been feeding my fish live bloodworms and mosquito larvae from a bucket outside and my fish are loving them too :) !

For many years I had 2 wooden water butts which were teeming with daphnia during the summer months. My discus loved them, although I gather that the nutritional value in them was very small. Perhaps they relished the exercise in catching them!

I leave plastic drums with the tops cut off under the trees (leylandii) all year round. You should see the midge larvae in the summer months. Excellent fish food.

i believe daphnia have an excellent protien source for the fish.

Never been a Problem, I always rinse Put them in a Cup of Decholrinated water before the go in the tank.

What I have done recently is to net them which avoids the water trasferral :good:

Me too.

I net them.....and put them in dechlorinated water for a while (just so they don't go straight from butt to tank) for cleaning.

All my fish love them.... :good:

You seem to be more experienced than me, most are, but I`m enjoying the challenge. I`v had a garden pond for years, not koi and that is very rewarding. You mentioned a fry tank. I have three platies and two loaches also about 18 platy fry. One of the bought ones gave birth and so far they are thriving now probably too large to get eaten. being as this my first tank I will wait and see how many survive. The tank is a Juwel 180. Thanks for the info.
