Rainbows had fry

a couple of weeks ago i took rainbow (female guppy) out of the main tank and put her in a small fish bowl so that when she had some fry the other fish couldnt eat them i was starting to wonder whether she was going to have any ,but the next morning when i woke up she had had some fry i took her out and put her in a jug (cause there was that many i had to take her out ) i counted them and there was 21 fry , but the funny thing was that they normally eat there fry but they were swimming next to her and she didnt touch them in the end she had 37 fry i was very happy with her because i have never had that many guppy fry in one go.

thanx for the replie i have 33 left now cause 5 of them were born with big bellies and coulndnt swim very well sadly 4 of the 5 have died.

I would put down any that have any birth defects or are belly crawlers i.e ones that appear to constantly hang around the bottom of the tank because their swim bladders didn't fill up properly at birth.
Are the pair you bred by any chance brother and sister?

when u say put them down do u just meen kill them?


i dont no whether they r cause i bought them from the LFS

Yes any deformed fry or belly crawlers- deformed fry usually suffer a range of genetic problems or issues with their deformity and belly crawlers often die at a young age any way of swim bladder disorders. Any unfit fry will never be able to breed as their genetics are often unstable and so not fair to breed from so the best thing is to kill them early, even if they survive they are likely to suffer a range of illnesses in adult life and these fish would naturally be eaten and killed off in the wild anyway from prederters and the such like.

congrats on the fry! my guppy is the same as yours...when shes giving birth she doesnt eat the fry even if theyre swimming next to her but as soon as shes done shes a hunter!
