Rainbow Fish Missing Eye

This is really gross. This morning I noticed on of my rainbows is missing an eye, and there is actually a small chunk missing above the, errrr, where the eye used to be, so it looks like something took a bite out of him. The only fish I have that I could imagine doing this is the gouramis, and they've been very docile since I've had them.

My question is, can a fish live like this assuming he survives any infection (I don't have a hospital tank) or should I just put him down?

If the gourami has already took a chunk out of him he could do it again, yes the wound needs treating with melafix so it dosn't get infected they can survive with one eye.
