I currently have a fishtank set up in my bedroom with an Aquaclear 70 hang on filter. I love this filter and how it works. However, there is a large problem. The sound of the water flowing into the tank at night keeps me awake.

My lfs currently has a sale where all freshwater filters are 50% off! I need to find a filter that is very quiet.

depending on the size of your aquarium, i would recommend a canister filter, as an uncle's is dead quiet. you can't hear it at all. It an enheim or a fluval, not exactly shure. I heard both are pretty good anyways.

How do canister filters deposit water into the aquarium? Do they do it under the water line?

My tank is 42 gallons and the top of the tank is about 6' off the floor.

I have a Aqua Clear 70 and 50 and mine are very quiet. Try filling you tank higher with water, this should take care of the noise that it makes.

I fill my tanks until I can see a water level below the bottom of the top trim

I have tried to raise the water level and it only slightly reduces the noise. It sits far enough out of the water that my tank would almost have to overflow to stop the noise. :(

Are you sure that your filter is seting down on the rim all the way. I know I had that problem earlier today when I took my filters off to put a new background on. When I put the filter back on I didn't push it down all the way and it was resting on the rim. I pushed it down to the right spot and instant silence. I know with my two tanks my water level is almost to the bottom of the filters. Also when I'm doing water changes once the water level drop you can hear the water coming out of the filter. Really the only other thing I see that you can get is a canister filter but there not cheap. My suggestion is if you can get it silelent is try and get use to it after awhile you will get use to it. I have two filters in my main tank (55 gl) ones a Aqua clear 70 and ones a whisper that came with the tank. Also do you have a air stone or powerhead, because if so that may be the noise your hearing.

This does sound odd. I've used Aquaclears pretty much exclusively for a long time and the only time I have ever heard the water flowing into the tank is either when the water level is low, or when the filter needs cleaning and the flow is restricted. I'd give it a clean and make sure it's seated properly as suggested above. Another thing that may help: Sometimes Aquaclears need a wedge or shim between the filter and the back of the tank to level the filter. Sometimes they tend to sit leaning back which may increase the distance that the water travels back into the tank. (If this doesn't make sense - just say so and I'll try to explain better  )

Also the wedge that Griz metioned came with the filter it just sticks in the bottom and can be rotated to get the filter level. Also there is a plastic tab that sticks out off the motor that can be used for leveling. If this is causing a problem you can just snap it off. :good:

You can position the output of canisters below or above the waterline. Below the waterline a canister is practically silent. Eheim canisters cost a little more, but are well worth it. I recently pulled an AC70 off of my 65 gallon because I just love how quiet it is with the canister alone. The hob noise wasn't bothering anything, having a tank that runs dead silent in the living room is a cool thing.

Cannister filters, especially eheim, tend to be much quieter.

Try here for some good prices.

Thers also a 10% discount code floating around in the hardware/diy section....

I am going to purchase an eheim canister filter today. Thank you for your help.
