So my baby guppies are starting to show some flecks of black, and getting a little bit bigger. At the moment they're inside a net keep, where they seem happy enough (around 15 of them), my original plan was to keep them together until they're sexable, then put all the females in a seperate net keep. Once they're big enough not to be eaten by the lurking angelfish, I'd put them back into the main tank before offering them to a friend's pet store, though knowing me I'll probably end up keeping all of them.
My main concern is that they'll outgrow the net keeps before they're big enough. The angel is a small specimen, but I wouldn't entirely trust him until they're at least an inch or bigger. I have a spare 2' tank which I'm considering setting up, at the moment it's just full of dead crickets from feeding my beardy.
I have a sponge filter, the type where you just attach a pump to it, very basic. But surely I need to cycle the tank somehow? Would using 50% water from my larger tank and putting the sponge into my external filter be enough? If so, how long should the sponge be in the filter for before it's "safe" to use it in the fresh 2'? Or should I just throw it all together and plonk them all in right away?
Feedback much appreciated!
