ive always heard its better to overfilter than underfilter so id be taking a gamble and say you will be fine, to my knowledge if your filtration can turn over your tank 8 to 12 times an hour thats superb, you have a 240 litre tank and only a 1000 filter. im guessing that at best is turning your tank over 3 and a half times an hour so infact youd need alot more than another filter for overkill lol.

Hmm il get a bigger filter this week then didnt think i had low filtering its been doing fine:s altho i am understocked and is planted

its actually just on the limit of ok! turning over the tank 4 times an hour is the minimum target. when you see a filter say for tanks up to 250 litres that because its lph rate id 1000, your aps 1000 is ok atm but ive head they all underperform at around 750lph, id reccomend a fluval fx range or any top end fluval

I have an ApS 1000 on my 210l tank and it doesn't filter at 1000 lph when full of media-someone measured one once and got nearer 500 lph.

I've gone for a Fluval U4 to supplement it as I don't want to run a second external one due to the amount of pipework and extra holes in the lid!

Between them I'm more than happy its enough.

And no, unless you have a specialist setup, generally you can't have too much filtration. And, like having 2 smaller heaters instead of one big one I'd rather have 2 filters than one to build some redundancy into the system.

Pipe work im not bothered about due to it being hidden thanks for the help guys really helped

i too have an external filter with a fluval u4. i think no matter how big and expensive the external is, i like to have an internal filter also.

also one last tip for a simple test on how your external is performing. get a ten or twenty litre bucket. time how long your external filter takes to fill it up. then use some simple maths to work out how much water its filtering per hour. simple.
