hey there i'm just about to start adding the ammonia.

I've got my Ammonia solution, a medicine dropper and 10L bucket

What Gallon units are you all using for adding the ammonia?

The cycling topic(add daily method) says:
Take a small bucket fill it with water and then add 2 to 4 drops of ammonia per 5 gallon of water. Swirl it around to mix it and test to see what the ammonia reading is. Continue to do this until your reading is 5 to 6 ppm. Remember how many drops of ammonia you added and then, some simple maths will tell you how much to add to your tank to get the 5 to 6 ppm required to begin cycling.

So according to this conversion site i found 5US Gallons(Liquid)value=18.927059 litres and 5UK gallon= 22.73045 litres

Which one should i be using? Or does it really not matter being a little off?

lol only have a 10l bucket i'll have to put in tiny drops of ammonia

thanks again guys i just wanna get this right!:p

it's probably us gallons, that's pretty standard. if you hear people talk about " per gallon or watts per gallon it's always us so i assume this is too.

hey guys a wee update on what i've done. Hope i'm doing it right!

I gradually added 14 drops from the pipette to my 10L Bucket of water and raised the ammonia level to the reccomended 5 -6 ppm

my tank is a 10 gallon (38 litres approx) so i think this works out about 10 Litre(s) = 2.6gallons so that works out at around 54drops i think lol? (14*4=56 -2=54) Lol i doubt it has to be dead on the spot:p Someone confirm that this is about right please!

cheers

hey dave where you get the ammonia from i have searched everywhere?
cheers kev.

get it from boots buddy :) look for a post i made earlier "is this the right product" that has a picture of the ammonia.

You should see the product as "household ammonia" with a blue X thing on it

Just trial and error really. I used a 500ml jug, and it took 1 drop to turn the levels to 6. But didnt help me for when i came to add it to the tank.

Added 10 drops at a time id say until you start getting closer to your target, depending on the size of your dropper. My 10 gallon tank took 40 drops. Worst that could happen is that you overdose, if so just change the water.

I'm now just waiting for the ammonia to drop so it should be all good :) it should take about a week according to the cycling thread?

What's good about the cycling is that i pretty much know what i want in my tank too now and i can find out where to get the fish from too! Plenty fish shops in Glasgow ^_^

Also soaking the wood i'm gonna put in my tank and i'll see what else i can fit in there :D
