How long does it take for the "milky" water to settle after adding sand to a tank? and should I have the filter on while it settles?

It should be all right within 24 hours. I've left my filter on because it clears faster, but if it's really fine sand you're dealing with it's probably best to leave it off for a day or two. Did you rinse and rinse and rinse before putting the sand in the tank?

we left the filter off for 12 hours or so to minimise the amount of sand hitting the impeller. We also did a significant water change before re-starting the pump which took a good amount away.

As above, i took my filter out and left it running in a bucket while i swapped from pea gravel to sand. Made a right mess even after hours of washing so i really stirred it all up and the pumped the water out into the garden, filled it back up, and put the filter back in. Was fine after a few hours.

I would only recommend getting as little of it as possible inside your filter. Its filling the sponges with crud for no reason....

Thanks everyone, It is starting to settle nicely now. And yes Old spouse, I rinsed and I rinsed and I rinsed...
