I think I already know this one.. trying to persuade a mate with a pretty naff aquarium to get a real plant in her tank.

The aquarium has filter heater and light all going into same cable somehow so detaching the hood without killing resident fish looks pretty much impossible. The 'light' looks like a lightbulb thing of some kind! Doesn't give off much light at all. Room is very light though in day time.

Any plants that could cope with it?

There are some plants that would probably work. Here is a pretty good site. You can search by light requirements. One down side to low light plants is that they are usually slow growing which makes them more prone to algae growth on the leaves and stems.

sounds like a junk tank...why bother with a plant? if someones car is ready for the scrap heap putting some go faster stripes on wont help it!

Might want to add a second light to the hood. My Juwel came with a single light and was not sufficient for the plants I wanted to grow. So I've added another tube to the hood and this has helped enormously :)

Java fern is an excellent low light plant.

Java fern, java moss and anubis will all grow to some extent in low light. They need to be attached to bog wood or rocks rather than planted. They would grow better with at least some light source though even if it's just a desk lamp on them for a few hours a day.

Hope this helps

i agree with emma12321 any of those are an option (java fern/moss best IMO). i also agree with Tiggs if a new tank is an option. if not then chuck in some slow growers for the hell of it.

Elodea, cabomba and stuff should work, but get one of those arcadia clip-on lights, about 20 quid but they're pretty good
