Hi i'm hoping you can help me i've just been given in a tub of water, 4 neon tetras and a penguin tetra . my friends tank had burst and these were all she managed to recover and she wanted me to house them in my tank. the trouble is my tank isn't tropical. however i have a spare tank that i cleaned out tonight and put in some new gravel i had and a heater . the trouble is i need to get these in fast the water is up to 25 degrees now but obviously isnt cycled what shall i do leave them in the little tub with no filter or put them in this tank uncycled but the right temp and a filter in . is there anything i can do to speed up the cycling process . I've never kept tropical fish before so any help will be appreciated .

My coldwater tank is at 22 degrees but has fancy goldfish (3" the biggest) in would they be better in there with them as its established until i can cycle the new tank ??

Take a little bit of the media (that's whatever is inside the filter; probably sponges, but might be plastic balls, or ceraminc rings, it doesn't matter) from your goldfish's filter (you'll only need a quarter or so) and put that in the filter of the new tank, and it will be instantly cycled for a small amount of fish :good:

The good bacteria are the same in both coldwater and tropical tanks.

Thanks so much i will do that now and add the fish fingers crossed they will make it they are very cute .

i probably should have put a comma between fish and fingers there :hyper:

lol, it did make me look twice!

ok so i've added the media and put the fish in the tank they seem ok. no signs of disease or anything a couple of the neons are hiding under the filter but that could just be a little stress at being moved. what shall i do next?

if i do a water change daily will that help and if so how much and would tap water be ok ? I only have tapsafe which i use for my fancy goldfish would this be ok for the neons/penguin. or i have some tonic salt

sorry to be a pain
