Is your red tailed shark black with a red tail?? These grow to the adult size of up to 5"
Sharks can make a meal out of your neons in time.

Actually, despite their common name, the red tail black shark (RTBS) is largely herbivorious in the wild (and not a shark at all, but in the carp familty). It might bully a tetra or so, since RTBS's can be territorial and aggressive, but it is probably not going to go out of its way to make a meal out of the tetras.

That said, lightswitch, you do have some very large fish in a rather small tank. The chances of them living a long, healthy life in which they not just survive but thrive is low. There are many, many species that will thrive in a 10 gal tank, you just have to research them first. Ask around here as one of several places to look up info on the fish you want to keep, and you should be able to find several fish that will have long, happy, healthy lives in that smaller tank. Most fish shops will take fish back, especially if you explain to the manager that they (the shop) sold you a fish that will grow to be too big for your tank. Then you can pick out species that are appropriate for that tank. And, really, by keeping the right fish for the right tank, you can substantially lower the chances of disease like ich (whitespot) from coming back, so you may not ever have to deal with it ever again.

I new about the territorial and aggressive tendancy, keep forgetting they are not a shark, wasn't sure about them eating tetras, thought it best to play it safe.

Thanks for the clarification

The bristlenose pleco will also make a meal of the neons.

No, he won't. Bristlenoses are not predatory. I have my two in with livebearer fry and they don't touch them. It might graze on a dead body, but certainly would not chase a living fish. They are herbivorous and would very much prefer a slice of cucumber. The only problem with a bristlenose is the crap they produce- I find it hard work to keep my 63 gallon clean with two bristlies in it, so I wouldn't like to try this experiment in a 10 gallon.

Shoot I did it again, my apologies everyone, its not my intention to misinform.

Looks like I had better brush up on my research skills as well.

How would they get on in a 17g tank with 5 neons, pretty sure I have room for 1.
