My Angle Fishes have fin rot and i bought melafix. I am wondering if i need to remove my filter while using melafix. I am also wondering if melafix will harm my live plants.
If you have a filter which has carbon in it you will need to remove the carbon as it will take the meds straight out as you put them in. Melafix to my knowledge is harmless to plants, i have used it in the past and it hasn't caused any problems.
Finrot is bacterial and melafix wont help you need a proper anti bacterial med stronger than melafix. are you sure its finrot and not the fish having its fin nipped? Finrot is a rotting of the filaments between the rays.
I certainly wouldn't risk it. You don't know what chemicals are mixing in your water, and what reverse effects could happen. VERY risky to use two different medications at once.
Well, it's not so much a matter of waiting as removing the actual medicine from the water. If you have any activated carbon, that will do the job relatively quick, and then you'd be safe to add the second medicine (after removing the carbon that is).
If fish are bad through fin nipping by other fish melafix, but if not i find most finrot problems are due to poor water, or through over stocking or a cycling tank, so they need a bacterial med like maracyn if in the us, if in the uk,anti internal bacteria med by interpet, with finrot you have to find the cause to stop it happening again, good luck.
