Hi, this are probably really silly questions so apologies first!

I want to get an external filter for my Rio 240 tank because the standard Juwel filter doesn't do a particularly good job at keeping the water clear. Intending to have the two filters running together until the external is fully cycled.

Problem is, have been reading on here about removing the black filter box from the tank and I really don't fancy doing that at all! In fact, scares me stiff! So, can I keep the black box in there? And keep the heater in there or should I put it in the main part of the tank with a heater guard? If I don't have to take out the box what can I use to cover the outlet?

Many thanks - and apologies again for probably really daft questions!

ps was considering a Tetratec EX1200 or Eheim Ecco 2236 but now will probably be getting an Eheim Professional II 2026.

I was scared witless but tbh its a doddle to remove the Juwel box. The amount of extra space you will have in the tank is amazing if you do remove it, its really worth the effort. All i did was get a long thin craft knife and saw through the silicon holding the box on, then a firm but gentle tug removed it. Then using the blade clean excess silicon from the glass and bobs ur uncle ;)

I would say to Juwel DONT BLOODY SILICON ON THE NASTY BLACK BOXES.....SUCKERS ARE FINE!!!!

People dont want your crap filters!

We're running the tetratex 1200 on ours and its a great filter - got it new for £68 - you cant beat that for value...

It out performs any of the fluvals and rena xp externals we have and it LOADS easier to work with... took 30 mins to set it up from opening the box, Primer first time and Its cleared the tank over night... the jewul filter was made to look stupid very very quickly....

Try removing the filter - its not actually silicon that holds it in and with a bit of twisting and pulling they come out quite easily (if it was silicon it would be a nightmare)

removing the internal open the tank up loads and the extra benafits of just having the pipes (that are nearly clear on the tetratec) makes the tank look a lot tidier ;)

I really have to agree with smithrc that the tetratec made the juwel filter look very silly indeed andthe ease of use made a novice to externals (like me) feel very confident oin using it. Asfor removing the juwel filter i havent done that yet as was advised on the forum to leave the running together for 2 to 3 weeks. Gofo it your tank will look great :good:

If you don’t remove the filter box and leave the heater in there the chances are that you wouldn’t have enough water circulation around the heater to keep an even temp. I guess you could put the intake of the filter in the box and that would keep the water moving around the heater, but as the others said better get rid of the box, it’s a bit scary but not difficult to do. I like juwel tanks but the heaters, lights and filters are all rubbish. Eheim professional filters are great haven’t used any others except fluval which I wouldn’t use again.

I removed my Juwel filter box the other day, it was quite easy!

Get a blunt knife in there and get it out! The tank looks so much nicer without it! I'd probably change the heater too..my Juwel heater broke & cooked my fish.

Not to hi-jack the thread or anything.

But im planning to add an external filter to my tank, but plan to leave the internal running aswell. The filter I have in mind is the eheim ecco 2234.

Any thoughts on two filters running and also the ecco? I mean is it more beneficial to have both running, or better to run just the one? Iv heard the saying you can never overfilter, but i also have the thought in mind that if i remove that internal one, ill gain a bit more space in the tank.....

Thanks

I'm becoming VERY tempted by the TetraTec externals myself. For the last 2 1/2 years I've been using a Fluval 4 Plus internal, and very good they are, too, even on a 4ft. I'm just getting tired of taking it out of the tank for monthly maintenance.

Im hearing good things about the tetratecs to. I Fish store guy recommended one highly, although it was the only ones they stocked so I do not know if he was just tryna sell me it hard or not.

What about eheim eccos??

I just bought myself an Eheim Ecco 2234 the other day to replace the crappy fluval internal which came with my tank. So far Im very impressed with it. It's quiet, very easy to set up and did (and continues to do) a damn fine job of cleaning my tank. I dont have much experience with externals, but I'm really impressed with it.

Thanks for the replies - and the input on the other filters. Really appreciated.

Basically seems that either I stay with the juwel filter only or maybe run external and juwel. or talk very nicely to OH and see if he'll take the box out for me. I think I need to think on it but maybe go with 3rd option ;) (...maybe if i say i'll get the cheaper filter...? :hey:)

Thanks again
