hi all,
can some one tell me whats the best way to get rid of a type or hairy/furry green algae which keeps growing on my plants and tangles up with the rst of the plants, would a bristelnose be the best type of plec/algae eater to comabt this?, and if so, does any of our scottish members know where to get one from?

cheers folks

I don't think a bristlenose will touch hair algae. You might be better off with a Siamese Algae Eater ( Crossocheilus Siamensis ). They are known to eat that type of algae.

You might be better doing a search on compatability with your other fish first. As far as I know they are compatable with most community fish, but not red tailed sharks.

Also make sure you get a true S.A.E. and not one of the many look alikes, that are more aggressive.

Good luck!

Hi, I live in England. I used to have horrible hair algae hanging off every surface in the tank, including the gravel. I am fairly new to fish-keeping and I was overfeeding. Since I have cut down it has nearly all gone. I bought a Bristle-nosed pleco last week and he eats the flat sort of algae which is on the tank ornaments. Bristlenoses are common ( don't mean that in a bad way). I paid £3.95 for mine. If you live in an isolated place you can order fish by post. I have not done that myself so can't say if it's good or not.
