I have a few questions about setting up a 10g with some Multies

-Is it ok to use play sand and how deep?
-This might sound silly & I’m almost certain I know the answer but can I use a under gravel filter with sand?
-If a under gravel won’t work can I use a sponge filter instead?
-How many Multies can I put in my 10g?
-What ratio of male to female?
-What ratio of shells to fish?
-Aside from the shells should I put any other décor in the tank?
-What is a fair price for the fish?
-Anything else I need to know?

-Is it ok to use play sand and how deep?

Play sand is fine just rinse it well, I'd go for around 2 inches, multis don't really bury their shells they dig pits for them to sit in. However, they will happily dig to the bottom regardless of how deep the sand is.

-This might sound silly & I'm almost certain I know the answer but can I use a under gravel filter with sand?

Nope

-If a under gravel won't work can I use a sponge filter instead?

You can, however it will take up space and since Lake Tanganikya species are more sensitive to nitrates, a good power filter would suit you better.

-How many Multies can I put in my 10g?

I'd start with a trio, 1m/2f, they are prolific breeders and unless you are planning to breed them for sale more than one harem would quickly overrun your tank.

-What ratio of male to female?

1m/2f

-What ratio of shells to fish?

At least 3 shells for every fish, but more is always better.

-Aside from the shells should I put any other décor in the tank?

They'll only utilize the shells, but you can add rocks or any plants attached to rocks if you like. Just be sure any rocks are placed before adding the sand as the multies will dig under them.

-What is a fair price for the fish?

The price will depend on local supply and demand, and as such will vary from location to location. A fair price would be what you are willing to pay for them.

-Anything else I need to know?

Not that I can think of, great choice in fish though. :good:

You might want to check out pool filter sand, it is alittle bit coarser and I had very little problems cleaning it, i'm in the proccess of setting up a multi tank as well, you can get the sand at home depot for around 5.50 a 50# bag. Good luck !
